The students, the program clarifies, do not replace an employee but act as an intern to learn and practice skills for what the job entails, and they work two to three times per week between the hours of 11:00 and 1:30 p.m.

ROBBINSVILLE, NJ - The Robbinsville Township Municipal Council is encouraging local businesses to support Robbinsville High School’s transition program.

The program, according to a description distributed by Robbinsville High School, helps students to develop “valuable vocational skills” and prepare them to enter the workforce after high school.

“Our students are 16 to 21 years old and receive support and supervision from an instructional assistant provided by Robbinsville High School,” the description says, adding that students partake in activities of a limited duration, related to an educational purpose, and there is no guarantee or expectation that the activity will result in employment.

Council Vice President Deborah Blakely spoke about the program at a recent council meeting, adding that the body had recently sent a letter to local businesses. The letter, later shared with TAPinto Robbinsville, describes that the Township takes pride in being one that focuses on inclusivity.

“We welcome our residents with disabilities in our community, our playgrounds, schools, and recreational programs. Community involvement is essential for our residents with disabilities,” the letter reads. “ These residents teach us about empathy, compassion, and the importance of learning from others, learning their strengths and what gifts they offer.”

According to Robbinsville High School, businesses that partner with the Program are required to offer a space for students to translate skills from the classroom into a real workplace with similar expectations to any other employee and a desire to be a business that guides students in becoming independent, active, successful members in the community. Business must gain corporate approval where necessary, commit to a half or full year, and be willing to work with students with various needs.

“We hope you will consider welcoming our students into your business to help them grow, learn, and feel a purpose,” the Council’s letter reads. “Your business will certainly benefit with the extra hands, reliability from these students and their work ethic, all at no cost to you.”
