It’s been 10 years since the lanternfly landed in Pa. How bad is it?
When lanternflies were discovered in Berks County in 2014, panic set in among the country and region’s top scientists. They feared the insect would devastate Pennsylvania’s robust farming, lumber, and grape industries. A 2019 study projected annual costs of damage could reach $324 million and result in the loss of 2,800 jobs across agricultural industries.
Teen Birth Rates Decrease in Berks with Efforts of Prevention Initiative
Berks Teens announced that the latest data from the Pennsylvania Department of Health shows a decrease in teen birth rates for Berks County and the City of Reading. After a slight uptick in last year’s data, Berks Teens was encouraged by the improvement and their part in the effort. The numbers indicate that Berks County’s birth rate is, for the first time, better than that of the U.S. data overall, with 13.2 births per 1,000 in 2022. (see graph below.)

A house in Douglassville that sold for $975,000 tops the list of the most expensive residential real estate sales in Berks County in the past week. In total, 82 residential real estate sales were recorded in the county during the past week, with an average price of $309,310. The average price per square foot was $184.
