A cherished cassette single from the 1990s. A 7-inch vinyl release. A rocker like Eddie Vedder coaxing emotion from the strings of a ukulele. The music world resounds with examples of great sound coming from small packages.

Mid-Missouri audiences have encountered yet more evidence with the recent debut of sister band LaVa Girls. Sisters Ava and Daisy LaVaute, ages 7 and 6 respectively, have played summer shows in Rocheport and are set to perform this fall as part of the Biscuits, Beats and Brews festival lineup .

The sisters come by their musical bonafides naturally. Their dad, Colin LaVaute, is — among other things — the frontman for longtime area rockers Decadent Nation, a documentary filmmaker and host of the KBIA show The Big Muddy Music Hour .

The sisters have appeared on dad's radio show and, on the show's blog, LaVaute has detailed the sort of homeschool-of-rock he and his wife, Alicia, have initiated. Among other activities, the family has attended shows by the likes of Weezer and Incubus, enjoying a special soundcheck meet-and-greet with the latter act.

The pair played their first show, an 11-song set, this April at a fun run in Cosmo Park. The LaVautes have assisted their daughters and provided opportunities but, to hear Colin tell the story, the sisters took their own first steps in this direction.

"Since they knew what a job was, rock star has always been at the top of their desired career path. They want to do this. We’ve told them that if it stops being fun for them they can stop," he wrote in a blog post .

Interested in hearing more? Here are three places to find LaVa Girls.

    1. Social media and their website

The duo has Facebook and Instagram pages dedicated to their music, and you can learn more about the band at https://www.lavagirls.com/ .

    2. LaVa Girls React videos

These little active listeners join a popular wave of musical reaction videos on YouTube. Their first video features the girls, lava lamps in tow, responding to recent music from the band Kings of Leon. The pair marvel over rhythms and guitar tones and point out the absurdities inherent to music videos.

    3. LaVa Girls live shows

The duo played several shows this summer, and are set to perform at Biscuits, Beats and Brews in October, where their dad is festival director. Keep up with other show announcements via their website and social media.
