ROCHESTER HILLS (WWJ) An 8-year-boy who was critically injured in a mass shooting at a splash pad in Rochester Hills has been released from the hospital, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff said the boy, whose name will not be released, is resting “comfortably at home.”

His mother, 39 of Rochester Hills, was seriously injured while shielding her children from the gunman, according to the sheriff’s office.

She remains in the hospital. Her son, 4, has already been discharged.

Nine people, including the 4-year-old and 8-year-old siblings, were injured in the shooting.  Another woman, 30, remains hospitalized. All of the other victims have left the hospital.

The youngest of the victims is four and the oldest is 78.

“Many of the victims released earlier still face significant healing and health challenges,” the sheriff’s office said.

The shooting, which Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard described as “random”, happened in the afternoon of Saturday, June 15th at the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad on Auburn Road near John R.

Bouchard said the suspect, identified as Michael Nash of Shelby Township, fired as many as 28 shots from the steps of the splash pad, about 20 feet from the play area. Investigators said he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound later that night, while police had the mobile home he shared with his mother surrounded.

In a Go-Fund-Me page started by the 8-year-old boy’s aunt, she wrote: “Their dad is the sole provider of the family and will need to be off work for an undetermined amount of time.”

The Go-Fund Me was verified by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office and has raised more than $160,000 of its $175,000 goal.

“An act of evil happened upon my family and other families…at the splash pad,” the aunt wrote in an update, “But thousands and thousands of acts of kindness have shown through and upon us.”

A verified GoFund Me page was also set up for the Iafrate family, a family of five. According to the page, Danielle Iafrate was shot as she carried their 7-year-old daughter to safety. Her husband has been off work to drive her to therapy and errands.

The Coughlin family also has a verified page. According to the description on it, Micayla and Eric Coughlin were shot multiple times as they tried to protect their 2-year-old and 7-month-old daughters.
