ROCHESTER, N.Y., (WROC) — While June is recognized as Pride Month across the US, the City of Rochester begins its Pride celebrations in July.

That’s because the history of Rochester’s LGBTQ+ community is different than the rest of the country.

The city’s first-ever Pride event was in the early 70s in July when the annual Gay Picnic to benefit the Gay Alliance began. Today, Rochester’s Pride events attract people from across the state and the country.

The Pride Picnic is scheduled for July 14, with the Pride Festival and Parade kicking off on July 20.
