Weather Alert: More severe storms possible in upstate NY

The day after damaging storms brought high winds, large hail and soaking rains, the Rochester area remains in the crosshairs of a following storm in the mid-morning through early evening.

Monroe County and points west and southwest face a marginal risk of severe thunderstorms, while areas east and south have a more significant slight risk. The primary hazard in the storms will be localized damaging wind gusts and isolated large hail , though localized torrential rainfall is possible, too.

Severe storms possible in Rochester NY region

In Rochester, showers and thunderstorms are expected mainly between noon and 3 p.m., with some that could be severe, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo . An additional half to three-quarters of an inch will be possible during that span, with a 90% chance of precipitation. There is a marginal risk of excessive rainfall in the Rochester area, especially to the south and east.

The system entering the Northeast crossed through the Midwest on Monday, generating hundreds of storm reports and a wind gust of 75 mph at the Chicago O’Hare International Airport, according to AccuWeather. An isolated tornado could be generated by the storms which will affect most of New York state.

While there is the possibility of more showers and isolated thunderstorms through Wednesday as a cold front arrives from the Great Lakes, a building high pressure system to follow should create an extended period of dry and less humid weather.

NOAA's Storm Prediction Center updated the severe weather outlook Tuesday morning to include an enhanced risk, the third-highest risk level, for Central New York and parts east. The risk in the Weather Service in Buffalo's portion of the state increases as you head east.

Heat advisory in Finger Lakes and Southern Tier

Yates, Steuben and Seneca counties are under a heat advisory today as well, with heat index expected to be warmer than 95 degrees in the affected region. With such high heat and humidity, there are concerns about heat-related illness, so those in the advisory area should hydrate, stay in air-conditioned rooms and out of the sun.

How much rain fell in storms?

There was significant rainfall in the region yesterday, though totals varied dramatically by location. While Rush and Pittsford saw heavy rain with 1.87 inches and 1.78 inches, respectively, there was just a half-inch measured at Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport. Canandaigua (1.76 inches), Attica (1.73 inches) and York (1.8 inches) were among the local precipitation reports of note.

The Weather Service is sending a team to investigate possible tornadoes in Victor and Canandaigua after reports of damage and rotation visible on radar on Monday afternoon.
