Rochester Pride parade update: Thousands are expected to celebrate today. Follow our live updates

Participants in Rochester’s annual Pride Parade , usually held along Park Avenue, will march in celebration down South Avenue this year.

The 2023 Pride Parade and Festival saw the biggest turnout in history, with over 15,000 attendees and more than 200 groups marching. The parade will move from its longtime route on Park Avenue in 2024 to accommodate larger crowds and improve accessibility, organizers say.

Park Avenue is also undergoing resurfacing this summer from Alexander Street to East Avenue.

Along with a new route, Rochester Pride Month’s focal event will bring a bustling musical and drag lineup, vendors, and parking restrictions to look out for.

    History of Pride in Rochester

Pride Month, for the most part, is celebrated worldwide in June, commemorating the Stonewall Uprising in New York City in June of 1969. The Flower City celebrates Pride in July, though it hosted a number of events, including a drag brunch and and the Official Pride Bar Crawl, in June.

Pride’s beginnings in Rochester can be traced back to May of 1971 when about 300 protesters attended a sit-in — what they called a “gay-in” — at Genesee Valley Park.

The city began the annual tradition of hosting the Pride Picnic with the gathering of the “gay community picnic” in July 1972. The picnic, held July 13 this year, now marks the kick-off of Pride Week in Rochester.

The first Pride Parade in Rochester took place along East Main Street on June 28, 1989 — the 20th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. Organizers moved the parade to Park Avenue in 1991, where it was held annually until this year.

An adjoining Pride Festival was added to Pride Parade celebrations in 1996 and has been held throughout the city, including at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park in 2014 and 2015. It’s been at Highland Park since 2016.
