ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Rochester community and police department spent Sunday marking two years since the murder of RPD Officer Anthony Mazurkiewicz.

The beloved 29-year veteran of the force had been conducting surveillance with his partner, Officer Sino Seng, as part of a murder investigation amid a violent gang war .

Around 9:00 p.m. on July 21, 2022, their van was shot up.

Officer Mazurkiewicz was killed in the ambush. Officer Seng was shot and injured in the ankle. RPD Captain Greg Bello spoke with News 8 about the importance of taking time to remember the veteran officer’s sacrifice, and the risk law enforcement members take each day on the job.
He noted the incident just last week where an officer was shot at inside a patrol car.

“We had an officer sitting in his patrol car and somebody just randomly shot into it and that officer was almost killed yesterday — almost struck by gunfire and almost 2-years to the day of Officer Mazurkiewicz being killed by gunfire same thing of being in a vehicle that was shot into so its a sad day but it’s also a reflection on the heroics that our officers that we have out there,” Bello said.

Kelvin Vickers was found responsible for Mazurkiewicz’s death and the murders of two other men. He is serving life in prison without the possibility of parole.
