ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The Rochester Red Wings partnered with US Sports Camps this week for their second annual Nike Baseball Camp at Innovative Field.

The camp started Monday and runs through Thursday for kids ages 7 to 13. Organizers say it’s the best age for the kids to get started.

Campers spend the week training at Innovative Field with former major leaguer and current Red Wings Manager Matthew LeCroy, along with other Red Wings coaches and players.

“I think fundamentals in baseball are very key, and we’ve kind of lost that a little bit with travel ball, and we don’t practice enough,” LeCroy said. “If you don’t know the fundamentals of the game, you’re going to have a hard time playing, even at a good travel ball team, or high school, or even going on to college or pro. We know the fundamentals are important. Were trying to teach them the fundamentals so they can practice at home, practice with their team, so they can become better players.”

This year the camp hosts 100 players. With 25 more on a wait list, organizers say signing up early is key to participating in next year’s camp.
