Jonathan Mingo and Xavier Legette are competing with each other for playing time.

However, Mingo sees in Legette a "cool" person he offers on-field advice to as the South Carolina pass-catcher prepares for his first year in the league.

On Monday, Mingo revealed he helps translate what Legette is saying to some of the coaches who struggle to decipher what the Mullins, South Carolina native is saying. Mingo claims he can understand Legette because he's a southern guy, going as far as claiming Legette bumped him to the No. 2 country guy on the roster.

"I'm from the south, they used to call me the country boy last year," Mingo said to WCNC . "I got bumped to number two. I can understand him. We from the south."

Though it is all fun and games, Mingo and Legette do look like intriguing wide receiver prospects heading into the 2024 season.

After a down rookie season, Mingo wants to be more productive . A season ago, Mingo tallied 43 receptions for 418 yards, placing him tenth among the rest of the 2023 rookie receiver class . In his sophomore season, it is clear the receiver is hoping for more.

It is an effort that head coach Dave Canales is noticing .

“I think there’s a layer of comfortability that comes with second- and third-year players,” he said. “I see Mingo, I see Terrace — guys that are just playing really comfortably in a pro setting. And then of course, they’re big and fast and they catch it well.”

As for understanding what his teammate but depth chart rival is saying, Mingo doesn't need any of Bryce Young's "lock-in" advice. He has it covered.
