ROCK VALLEY, IA (KELO) — The flood clean-up continued in Rock Valley, Iowa Thursday. Around 400 students from local schools came out to help the struggling town.

Flood waters ravaged the Rock Valley Community School over the weekend.

“I came in here on Monday for the first time and got to take a look at it, and you can see the waterline was up anywhere between a foot and two feet in different parts of school,” Rock Valley teacher Cory Brandt said.

And this was the scene today. Items packed into the auditorium, bare classrooms with mud on the floors and a pile of unsalvageable things outside.

“The damage is extensive, and it’s a hard thing to look at,” Brandt said.

“I’m going to be a senior, and I don’t know if I’ll be able to have it in the school with the condition that it’s in,” Rock Valley student Covey Wynia said.

But today, they had an overwhelming amount of support from at least ten area schools.

“It’s really cool seeing all of them come out to show their support of us. Even though we are like opposing schools, we play in sports and stuff, they still want to come because they want to show that they still care about us,” Wynia said.

“I’m thankful for everybody here and we’ve just, words really can’t put anything to justice right now, what I’m feeling,” Brandt said.

Receiving help today was vital, but the school and the town still have a long way to go.

“The sprint’s over. The marathon is going to begin,” Brandt said.
