ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) — Midway Village takes time to educate the public on Rockford’s involvement in the Civil War on July 5th.

They decided the best way to educate was by hosting a “Living History” event.

Midway Village focused on Camp Fuller, which was a Civil War camp that was established along the Rock River in 1862. Visitors learn through exhibits, dances and costumed history interpreters in the Victorian village.

Two of the historical figures who will be on-site are General John Fuller and Albert Cashier, a soldier from Belvidere.

“He served with the Union Army and then years later, after he was honorably discharged, it was found out that he was born female at birth,” said Midway Village Museum Educator Riley Ellison. “He was on site as well, and we will be talking about his story as well, because it’s fascinating. He was the only female-born soldier, that never was discovered.”

    The event continues Saturday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m.

Tickets for the Living History event are $14 for adults and $12 for kids.
