ROCKTON — Zoey Calhoun tossed a 3-hit shutout to lift Hononegah to a 1-0 victory over Rock Island in the opener of a non-conference double-header Saturday at Swanson Park and delivered the decisive two-run double in the nightcap as the Indians rallied for a 5-4 win.

Hononegah (3-1) hadn’t played since March 21 and managed just two hits in the opener. They were back-to-back doubles by Natalie Kinney and Irelyn O’Brien and produced the only run of the game.

Left-hander Calhoun went the distance, striking out six and walking one. Rock Island’s biggest threat was in the second inning when AJ Lincoln hit a one-out triple. Calhoun got out of it with a strikeout and a flyout. The Lady Rocks also had a pair of singles in the sixth, but with two outs and a strikeout allowed Calhoun to escape that jam as well.

O’Brien started in the pitcher’s circle in game two and was touched for five hits and three runs (just one earned) in three innings. Reliever Sam Nosbisch allowed three hits and two runs in two innings as Rock Island went up 5-0.

The Indians tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Danielle Franz and Kinney had RBI singles and O’Brien had a sacrifice fly to draw Hononegah within 5-3. Emma Tapia and Kinney executed a double steal with Kinney stealing home and an error allowed Tapia to come home with the tying run.

In the sixth, Tapia drew a walk and Addison Huburt came on to pinch-run. She was at third and Peyton Klikno at second two outs later when Calhoun hit a two-run double over the right fielder’s head.

Tapia picked up the win with two scoreless innings in relief.

Hononegah travels to Belvidere for a NIC-10 game on Monday.

    • BRODHEAD 6, MT. HOREB 5: Sophia Leitzen knocked in four runs on two hits and starter Ava Risum picked up her second win as the Cardinals held on to win the non-conference win.

Leitzen had a two-run double in the second inning and then doubled in two more runs in the fourth.

Risum allowed seven hits and two runs over five innings, striking out seven and walking one. Leitzen came on in relief and allowed three unearned runs in two innings.

Leah Rear matched teammate Leitzen’s two hits.

The Cards host Monroe on Monday.

    • NORTH BOONE 9-22, BELVIDERE 0-1: The Vikings hammered the host Bucs in a pair of non-conference games on Saturday.

Haven Hahn led a nine-hit attack in the opener, driving in five runs on three hits. Winning pitcher Camryn Carter allowed only one hit and struck out 15 batters.

The Vikings had 14 hits in the nightcap, including a 3-for-3 game by Olivia Johnson that included three runs scored and three RBIs. Danielle Goodman was 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and three RBIs. The game went only four innings with winning pitcher Camdyn Hall allowing just two hits and one earned run. She struck out five.

    • ROCKFORD GUILFORD 11, SOUTH BELOIT 0: Visiting Guilford scored three times in the second inning and six more in the third on its way to a 10-run rule win in five innings on Friday.

Whitney Schnack took the loss in the pitcher’s circle. Only three of the 11 runs charged to her were earned. She struck out five.

Collecting the SoBos’ hits were Zorah Martin, Taniyah Crawford and Macey Lineman.

    • BURLINGTON 10-14, BELOIT MEMORIAL 0-4: The Purple Knights were swept by the visiting Demons in a doubleheader on Friday, the first conference action Beloit has seen this season as it begins its first year in the Southern Lakes Conference.

Trinity Winfield and Amya Clark got the only two Knights’ hits in the six-inning first game as Burlington (3-0) racked up eight hits and surged ahead with a six-run second.

Delayna Hyser took the loss after allowing six runs (two earned) on four hits with a strikeout in two innings.

In the second game, Burlington plated seven runs in the first off Rilynne Cleland and held a 12-1 lead after a five-run third.

Allie Gustafson launched a solo home run in the fifth and Hyser added an RBI sacrifice fly as part of a three-run fifth but Beloit (1-2, 0-2 SLC) committed four errors in the setback.

Clark went 2-for-3 while Winfield and Celeland added hits. Celeland allowed 12 runs (nine earned) on 13 hits in 2 2-3 innings.

    • JEFFERSON 5, BIG FOOT 0: A four-run fifth inning propelled the Eagles to a shutout victory over the hosting Chiefs on Friday.

Hildie Dempsey hit a two-run single and scored on a double by Bre Mengel, who had three hits, as part of the big inning for Jefferson (1-0).

Big Foot had four different batters scatter four singles while Holly Kynell allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits in five innings.

    • BIG FOOT 3, CLINTON 2: One heck of a pitcher’s duel broke out in Walworth on Saturday as the Chiefs’ Holly Kynell and Cougars’ Ashley Theisen went toe-to-toe for 10 innings.

But it was a bunt by Big Foot’s Leah Paulsen that dribbled to Clinton third baseman London Winch and was misplayed, allowing automatic runner Claire Patek to score the game-winning run.

The Cougars (0-1) struck first in the Rock Valley Rock showdown when Theisen smacked a two-run double to right field in the first. But Mylee Walter scored on an error by Theisen and Kynell was walked with the bases loaded, leaving the game tied at two until the 10th.

Theisen allowed three hits and two runs, neither earned, in the complete game while walking just one and striking out a whopping 19 batters. Kynell allowed four hits, two runs (one earned) with five walks and 10 strikeouts.

Theisen and Jordi Morrison had two hits for Clinton while Walter led the way with two for Big Foot (2-1).

    • PARKVIEW 7, PALMYRA-EAGLE 4: Down 3-2 in the top of the fifth inning, the Vikings (1-2) exploded for five runs to steal a Trailways-South Conference softball road victory on Friday against the Panthers (1-4).

With the bases loaded, Parkview shortstop Joey Meyers hit a double that cleared the bases, gave the Vikings a 5-2 advantage. In the next at-bat, Vikings pitcher Kylie Stark homered to center field, giving Parkview a 7-4 lead.

Stark picked up the win in the circle, pitching all seven innings of the game and striking out nine.
