Monday is the last day the Rocky Mount Animal Services will be offering free pet adoptions at its animal shelter on Church Street. Although there are other expenses that go along with adopting a dog or a cat, at least the initial $45 adoption fee won’t be one of them.

A spokesperson for the city of Rocky Mount said the Rocky Mount Animal Services Unit is currently waiving adoption fees through Monday to encourage anyone looking for a pet companion to come by the animal shelter located at 1017 N. Church St.

“Every animal that comes through our facility deserves a forever home, and your support in spreading the word can make a big impact,” the city’s spokesperson said. “Our facility is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for those interested in adoption, except on holidays.”

Shelter Attendant Jessica Braswell said the shelter was at capacity, explaining the need for the free adoption event. Braswell said Friday that the shelter currently had 15 cats and 20 dogs that were ready for new homes.

Braswell said the best part of her job is seeing animals she is fond of getting adopted by good people.

“It’s very rewarding when you spend time with a dog here, and you build an attachment to it, and then you get to see it go off to a good home, that’s definitely a rewarding experience,” Braswell said.

According to the city’s Animal Services’ adoption guidelines, proof that the adopted pet has been vaccinated against rabies and has been spayed or neutered must be presented to the Animal Services within 30 days. These regulations are fully explained on the adoption receipt.

The animal shelter provides new pet owners with list of veterinarians and other providers of vaccines and spay and neuter services.

The Society of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Wake County is promoting its Saving Lives Spay/Neuter Clinic as a low-cost clinic. The agency’s webpage can be found at spcawake.org/services/fix/. Wake County residency is not required for this service.

“Our reduced prices are made possible thanks to public donations so we can provide financially accessible spay/neuter for anyone who needs it,” a spokesman with the nonprofit agency said. “Our goal is to improve your pet’s overall health, prevent unwanted litters and take major strides to reduce pet overpopulation in our community.”

The spokesman said that base prices for the spay and neuter service ranges from $50-$165 depending on the pet’s species, gender and other needs. Additional services such as vaccines, microchips and other testing are available for an additional reduced fee, the spokesperson said.

Last year, the Rocky Mount Animal Services agency responded to nearly 8,000 calls for service and assisted almost 1,300 animals. It works with more than 300 rescue groups to find forever homes for animals, according to a spokesperson for the city.

In related news, a good place to show off a newly adopted pet will be the agency’s Dog Festival held Aug. 17 at the Best Friend’s Dog Park, located at 480 N. Lee St. in Rocky Mount. Signup begins at 10 a.m. Events will include a dog race, a dog fashion show and a talent show for dogs. There will be free hot dogs starting at noon.
