Tarboro police detective suspended for post about Trump assassination attempt
A Tarboro police detective sergeant is currently suspended without pay after suggesting via his social media link that former President Donald Trump should have ended up dead in a recent assassination attempt while campaigning in Pennsylvania. Brandon Richardson, who has been on the town’s police force for nearly 24 years, was taken off the payroll Monday and until further notice as further disciplinary action is still being considered, Town Manager Troy Lewis said in email correspondence Tuesday. ...
A celebration of dance: 'Footloose' took the stage at the Imperial Centre
“Bomont? Where the hell is Bomont?” Over the weekend, the celebrated teen-centric musical “Footloose” took to the stage for its one-weekend run at the Imperial Centre for the Arts and Sciences in Rocky Mount to answer that question. “Footloose” came to prominence as a 1984 movie musical starring Kevin Bacon, Lori Singer, John Lithgow and Sarah Jessica Parker. It’s about a Chicago teen forced to relocate to the fictional rural...
Letter: Hateful screed season
The attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump has for all intents and purposes totally negated the hateful screeds of some folks who attempted to use false narratives, misleading innuendos, artfully contrived misconceptions and outright lies to denigrate him in order to damage his reelection bid. Those have been reduced to utter propaganda by the reality of an attempted assassination by a demented young man who was probably influenced to do what he did by reading and listening to this garbage. I believe that this...
In Bailey, a new town seal design is finalized with help from a local business
Pretty soon, residents in the town of Bailey may start seeing the finished product of an idea that was brought to life by a local business. Image Designs Ink didn’t just get the job done — the local business actually donated the time spent redesigning the town seal, Bailey’s board of commissioners recently learned. Earlier this year, Image Designs Ink agreed to work with Bailey Mayor Owen H. Strickland II...

Alexander H. Jones: Harris-Cooper could be winning ticket for Dems
I have admired Joe Biden for the entire time I have followed politics. I supported his primary candidacy in 2020, cast an emphatic vote for him that fall, and stood squarely behind much of his agenda as he expanded clean energy, made health care more affordable and revitalized manufacturing across the heartland of this country. But Biden’s prior success was not a guarantee that his political career could withstand the costs of his aging body and mind. The CNN debate with Trump did immense damage to Biden’s candidacy. At this point, I do not think that Joe Biden is the...
John Hood: Trump shooting should shock the conscience
Enough. The attempted assassination of Donald Trump, a despicable and indefensible act that came within a whisker of success, should shock the conscience of a seething nation. It should prompt sober reflection, deep introspection, and prayer. The right people are saying the right things. “There’s no place for this kind of violence in America,” said President Joe Biden, urging us to “unite as one nation to condemn it.” U.S. Sen....
Ask the Doctors: Recognize and treat heat-related dangers
Q My landscaping business keeps me outside a lot, and my son has a job as a line cook. We both worked through heat waves last summer that made our jobs dangerous. Can you please write about how to know if you’re in trouble with the heat and what you can do about it? A You and your son are among an estimated 50 million workers in the United States whose occupations put them at physical risk during periods of extreme heat. This is a...
Froma Harrop: Economy is superior with Biden
In overseeing the American economy, President Joe Biden has shown himself to be an amazing manager. It’s all there in the numbers, especially when placed next to those of his predecessor. And should Biden win a second term and show himself to be not as sharp as he was four years ago, small matter economy-wise. He has a high-caliber administration to keep the good times rolling. Where do we start? Let’s start with Donald Trump’s favorite economic yardstick, stock market performance. The S&P 500 had...
Editorial: Disinformation risky business for US military
As disinformation and misinformation become major tools of global conflict, democracies need to decide when and how they should influence populations abroad. Influence campaigns are undoubtedly necessary, but how to conduct them according to democratic values is less obvious. The Pentagon has offered a good lesson in what not to do. A clandestine disinformation campaign against Chinese coronavirus vaccines in 2020 and 2021, a program just revealed in an investigation by Reuters, was a grave error. ...

Letter: Feed people lies consistently, and they start believing the lies
The U.S. economy under President Joe Biden came back better than any economy in the world after COVID. The stock market is at record highs and gains. The job market is excellent, and gas prices are reasonable. Yet MAGA parroting former President Donald Trump would have you believe the economy is in shambles. They all believe this because that’s what Trump told them. They cannot fathom that their behavior is cult like. Questions of Trump supporters were asked, but the supporters were told that Biden...

Three school board candidates tout their conservative values
A recent gathering of the Tar River Republican Women club at a downtown Nashville restaurant gave three candidates a chance to speak to voters about the values they would champion if elected. Two Nash County Board of Education members and a third candidate seeking election to the school board in the Nov. 5 general election told the crowd at the gathering, held the evening of July 11, that they were politically conservative in their viewpoints. ...

Located at the intersection of Shiloh Farm Road and U.S. 64 East, the area will become the home of both the town’s public works and fire departments as well as Pioneer Court, a public housing project. ...
Star Parker: Court delivers correct decision on homelessness
Homelessness, unfortunately, has become a persistent and growing problem in the United States. The Supreme Court, in City of Grants Pass v. Johnson, just dealt with one big issue associated with this problem — the ability of cities to prohibit camping on public property. Per the city of Grants Pass, Oregon, the answer has been that the municipality can prohibit such activity. Violators are subject to fines and jail time. ...
Letter: Times of Distress
In these times of uncertainty, we need God more. Our paths are woven in fear. These times are foretold in the Bible. We depend on man to bring on a fair and just resolution, wrong! We get caught up with who has the power; we don’t realize, it is God. Former President Donald Trump was put in power for a reason: to show us that this country is still infested...
