New nonprofit, Roman’s World, launches to help families affected by autism
Musician and author Jonathan “Mookie” Morant has recently stepped into a new role: nonprofit founder. Inspired by his young son, this summer Morant started up his new nonprofit foundation, “Rōman’s World,” which aims to directly assist families with children on the autism spectrum. Morant’s son, Rōman, a 6-year-old is autistic and non-verbal.
SCDPPP hopes to help offenders find work
A new program from the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon services aims to help offenders find jobs. SC cities to revamp historic theaters with help from state funding
Once a hub for movie-goers in downtown Florence, the Carolina Theatre has spent years sitting unused, filled with storage boxes. City officials want to restore the theater to its 1920s glory, complete with a movie screen, ornate moldings and a marquee outside. Along with movies, the theater will be a spot for concerts, weddings and conferences that are too big for the existing venues but too small for the nearby convention center.
Greenville County Council moves penny sales tax to next step but not without controversy
A penny sales tax is a step closer to being on the November ballot after a Greenville County Council vote on Tuesday. In a second reading, the council voted 8-4 to advance the referendum, which still needs one more reading before voters can decide whether to add a 1% sales tax to retail purchases in the county. The next vote is expected in August.

ASHEVILLE — Pisgah Legal Services (PLS) announces the selection of Jaclyn “Jackie” Kiger as its new Executive Director, following an extensive search process. Kiger will replace Jim Barrett, who is retiring after 41 years of serving the nonprofit which assists more than 23,000 people in Western North Carolina (WNC) each year. John Noor, President of the PLS Board of Directors, states, “We are thrilled to welcome Jackie as our new Executive Director. She brings experience, passion and commitment to the work of Pisgah Legal Services.”...
