ROGERS, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — The DMV in Rogers has shut down because of tornado damage, causing many people to be redirected to other DMV locations.

The DMV in Rogers sustained significant tornado damage to the roof, according to Melody Kwok, Director of Communications for the Benton County government.

“The AC units on the top of the roof were blown across the roof, some of them fell off the roof and that created big holes in the roof which caused water damage to the building,” Kwok said.

Construction started on the more than four-thousand square foot building started on July 15. Repairs include the installation of a permanent roof and lingering water damage.

Scott Hardin, spokesperson for the Arkansas Department of Finance released a statement on July 15 that reads:

Due to the tornado related damages, the office will remain closed until the roofing is installed, and the quality of air is ensured…. If conditions allowed, the Rogers office would re-open tomorrow; this would make life easier for both the customers and employees.”

Many people were unaware that the office was closed. Kyle Kiefer, who lives in Bentonville, says that he was turned away from the DMV and was given options of other locations that could help him.

“I work from eight to five, and it feels like I have to use half a day of vacation just to get my truck assessed and registered,” Kiefer said. “Hopefully, the systems will be up tomorrow. If not, I’m not sure what I’ll do—I have to get my truck registered by the end of the week.”

The reopening of the Rogers DMV is currently targeted for early August, but the exact date remains uncertain.
