ROGERSVILLE — A year ago, a team of young guns calling themselves the Red Rockets dominated the competition to win the Rogersville Parks and Recreation Department’s wiffleball tournament and take home the very first Summer of Fun championship T-shirts.

On Saturday, five of the seven original Red Rockets returned to Rogersville City Park to try to defend that title. As it turned out, team members — most of them former Cherokee athletes — hadn’t lost a step since graduation.

The Red Rockets beat Parks & Wrecked in a best-of-three championship series to lay claim to their second straight wiffleball championship and the 2024 Summer of Fun T-shirts that went with it. This year’s squad included Brayden Lawson, Will Price, Brady LeRoy, Tyler Lawson and Avery Lowe.

It was the third overall Summer of Fun title for the Red Rockets, who also put together a championship kickball team a year ago. The fourth annual Fourth of July Kickball Tournament is scheduled for Thursday at 10 a.m. on the ballfields at Rogersville City Park. The annual Fourth of July 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament will also be held that day with games in two divisions, starting at 10 a.m. at the park’s court.

The Summer of Fun serves up a host of sports tournaments, moonlight swims and other activities throughout the summer. The idea is to offer something for everyone.

Next up after the holiday events is Guys & Dolls Golf Night at McDonald Hills Golf Course on July 12 at 5:30 p.m. and a COED Beach Volleyball Tournament at Rogersville City Park on July 13, starting at 10 a.m.

Registration opens July 8 at 8 a.m. for the Summer of Fun Pickleball Tournament. There’ll be an open division and senior division during the event on July 27, with action starting at 10 a.m.

Registration for Rogersville Parks and Recreation events is available online at www.rogersvillerecdesk.com or in person at the office, located at 1101 E. Main St. To learn more about any of the events, call 423-272-2545 or email matts@rogersvilletn.gov. Registration opens two weeks before each event.
