Statement released on managing invasive barred owls to protect at-risk spotted owls
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is announcing its final environmental impact statement analyzing proposed barred owl management alternatives to protect northern and California spotted owls in Washington, Oregon and California from invasive barred owls. SISKIYOU COUNTY, Calif. – The Donomore Fire was one of multiple fire starts caused by lightning strikes on the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest over the last two days. As of Wednesday morning, the Donomore Fire had burned through 45 acres on the Siskiyou Mountains Ranger District near the Oregon-California border.
New owner of Portland Tribune, other Oregon newspapers lays off some staff
The new owner of the Portland Tribune and roughly 20 other Oregon newspapers on Tuesday laid off an unknown number of employees, including in its newsrooms. Carpenter Media Group, which owns 180 publications in the U.S. and Canada, purchased the publications from their local owner, Robert Pamplin Jr., last month. Tuesday’s layoffs, which were confirmed by two sources with direct knowledge of the cuts, include longtime statehouse reporter Peter Wong.

5 FIRE STARTS CONFIRMED IN THE DOUGLAS DISTRICT
5 fire starts have been confirmed in the Douglas District following late afternoon lightning storms on Tuesday. A release from the Douglas Forest Protective Association said the storms swept across the district at around 5:00 p.m. Public Information Officer Rachel Pope said strikes were recorded from Glendale to Elkton on the west side of the district and from Tiller to the north of Glide on the east side. Pope said DFPA immediately initiated aerial and ground lightning reconnaissance.
