Marin caretaker rapes elderly patient, ‘brutally' attacks her and daughter: sheriff

( KRON ) — An elderly Marin County woman was raped and beaten by her caretaker on Sunday. The Marin County Sheriff’s Department said she, her daughter, and the caretaker’s girlfriend were all “brutally” beaten following the rape.

According to the sheriff’s office, suspect Yumi Zinghkai, 23, of Rohnert Park, was the paid caretaker for an elderly woman. The woman suffered from memory-related issues “and is unable to care for herself or make any decisions on her own behalf.”

At about 5:30 p.m., law enforcement received calls that Zinghkai had “brutally attacked his elderly patient and her daughter before the caretaker fled the home,” the sheriff’s office said.

According to the elderly woman’s daughter, she arrived to find Zinghkai “sexually raping” her mother. When the daughter yelled at the caretaker to stop, Zinghkai “grabbed the daughter by the throat and choked her until she lost consciousness,” the sheriff’s office said.

Zinghkai then dragged “her unconscious body to the kitchen, where [the daughter] woke, and Zinghkai held her at knifepoint.” According to the sheriff’s office, he threatened to kill her “if she called the police.”

After “nearly two hours being held captive,” the daughter was able to convince the caretaker to leave the home to “handle personal matters [Zinghkai] mentioned were important to him.” Zinghkai leaving the residence allowed the daughter to call 9-1-1, the sheriff’s office said.

Zinghkai ultimately went home to his girlfriend, who he immediately admitted he was suicidal to. After “needing” to return to his elderly patient, the girlfriend accompanied him in his car.

After the girlfriend was concerned about hearing about suicidal thoughts from Zhingkai, she attempted to call 9-1-1 while in the car. Zinghkai then “took her phone, and began to batter her, while they drove,” striking his girlfriend “multiple times” while in the car.

Zinghkai arrived at the residence and found law enforcement. Zinghkai attempted to flee by pushing his girlfriend “from the moving vehicle.” The sheriff’s office said he was apprehended by officers as he attempted to flee.

According to the sheriff’s office, Zinghkai was arrested for a multitude of charges, including:

• Rape
• Attempted Murder
• Elder Abuse Against Dependent Adult
• Kidnapping
• Lewd and Lascivious Act by Caretaker on Dependent Adult
• Battery with Serious Bodily Injury
• Robbery
• Dissuading a Witness
• Destroying Evidence
• Displaying/Brandishing a Weapon
• Domestic Violence
• Damage to Victims Phone Attempting to call 911

He is currently being held in jail without bail, pending arraignment, the sheriff’s office said.
