ROLLA, ND ( KXNET ) — Three cities have installed four new rotating mechanical outdoor warning sirens.

The sirens were strategically placed throughout Rolla, Rolette, and Mylo for advanced warnings for tornados, hazardous material incidents, and other emergencies.

The installation was made possible through funding from the Hazard Mitigation Grant from the North Dakota Department of Emergency Services (NDDES), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG).

The sirens are designed to provide early alerts, which will give residents critical time to take protective actions. The rotating design makes sure that the sirens can be heard from all directions. They can also be activated directly from the 911 dispatch center.

The cities encourage everyone to familiarize themselves with the sound and to have a plan in place. Regular siren testing will be conducted on the first Wednesday of the month at 10 a.m.
