Officials and neighbors have voiced concerns that Davis Road is too narrow to support traffic for a proposed RV campground. Rome-Floyd Planning Department

Plans for a new RV campground at 125 Davis Road are heading back to the Rome Floyd Planning Commission on Thursday. The tract is off Cave Spring Road, across from Cedar Creek RV and Outdoor Center.

The Floyd County Commission denied the request for a special use permit in April but agreed it could be resubmitted if the project was adjusted to address concerns. Since then, Anthony Carver has cut the number of proposed campsites and indicated he would fund an upgrade of the narrow Davis Road. He also said he would give up the property’s SUP for outdoor concerts and other events in exchange.

However, it’s unclear if the soil will accommodate the required septic systems, neighbors remain opposed to the project and the planning staff is rethinking regulations for recreational vehicle campgrounds.

“These should remain tourist-oriented lodging facilities, whereas in many areas they appear to be transitioning to densely packed pockets of makeshift housing,” the report notes. “Generally speaking, it would be wiser to limit RV camping to small, ‘pocket park’ environments, preferably with sewer access.”

The planning commission will meet at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in City Hall, 601 Broad St. The citizen board’s regular July meeting date was bumped back a week due to the Independence Day holiday.

Among the other proposals slated for hearings in front of the citizen board is a request for a SUP to establish a solar farm on a nearly 16-acre tract at 4859 Alabama Highway. The property just east of Horseleg Creek Road is currently zoned for Office Institutional use and the applicant also is asking for Suburban Residential zoning.

Other applications in the unincorporated area are for Community Commercial rezoning for a towing service and vehicle storage at 3128 Cave Spring Road and a zoning correction at 3243 Wax Road to enable the sale of the house.

Several requests in the city of Rome also are on the agenda:

♦ Rezonings at No. 3 and No. 7 Westlyn Drive from Community Commercial to Suburban Residential to reflect the existing use.

♦ A special use permit at 312 E. 15th St. to allow reconstruction of the existing duplex damaged by fire.

♦ Annexation of the property at 122 Morgan Drive.

♦ A rezoning at 209 Redmond Road from Neighborhood Office Commercial to Duplex Residential to replace the existing home with a duplex.

The planning commission makes recommendations to the Rome City and Floyd County commissions, which will take up the requests at their meetings in the fourth week of July.
