Adoptions at the Floyd County PAWS are free Friday to mark the reopening of the shelter after it was closed under quarantine as they attempted to learn the reason behind the death of a dog.

“We’re having free adoptions in celebration,” PAWS Director Katy Walters said. “We’re happy things are returning to normal.”

The shelter was closed from Aug. 2 through Wednesday out of an abundance of caution after the unexpected death of the dog.

The shelter requested a necropsy for it, and the results returned negative for any infectious diseases including distemper, a highly contagious disease mostly found in dogs.

Walters also said that the shelter veterinarian is on vacation, another reason to be extra cautious.

PAWS is responsible for all animal control operations including field operations, shelter management and care, and the animal adoption/rescue program for Floyd County Animal Control.

Animals at PAWS are available for adoption on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 1-5 p.m. The adoption fee is usually $35 for cats and $40 for dogs.

The county-owned shelter is at 99 North Ave. in Rome.
