ROME, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — A Greig man is dead after a fight at a softball game in Rome led to a shooting, according to Rome Police.

Officers were called to a softball tournament at Haselton-Wright Park in Rome at approximately 8:15 pm on Sunday, July 14. Upon their arrival, they met with board members of the softball league, who asked officers to remove a person — later identified as 34-year-old Theodore Chrystie of Greig in Lewis County. They were asking for his removal due to alleged disruptive behavior.

Officers say that they then spoke with Chrystie. During their conversation, board members approached Chrystie and stated he would be welcome to stay, so long as he did not dispute with other players.

Officers then stayed at the ball park and say they noted no further incidents.

At approximately 10:45, police say players and spectators began leaving the park. During that time, Chrystie engaged in an altercation with other players. During the dispute, officers say a gun was allegedly produced, and a struggle over the gun ensued. As they struggled for the gun, police say the gun went off, striking Chrystie in the neck.

Chrystie was transported to an area hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, July 16.

According to police, the hand gun used in the incident was not legally possessed. At this time, no arrests have been made and no charges have been filed. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact Rome Police at 315-339-7744. You may also submit a fully anonymous tip online through the Mohawk Valley Crime Stoppers’ website , over the phone at 1-866-730-8477 (TIPS), or by using the P3 Tips mobile app.
