A man was fatally shot at a park in Rome following a softball game, according to the Rome Police Department.

On Sunday, July 14, while at a softball tournament in Haselton-Wright Park, police say a verbal dispute ensued between Theodore Chrystie and members of an opposing team.

At approximately 8:15 p.m., the Rome Police Department was called to the park for a report of a dispute. Upon arrival, officers spoke with board members of the softball league.

These board members asked officers to remove Chrystie, 34 of Greig, NY, from the park due to disruptive behavior. Officers began speaking with Chrystie.

During that conversation, board members approached Chrystie and the officers and stated Chrystie would be welcome to stay so long as he did not dispute with the other players.

Officers stayed at the park for some time and noted no further altercations.

At approximately 10:45 p.m., with the final game of the night over, the players and spectators began leaving the park. During that time, Chrystie and other players again engaged in a verbal dispute.

During the dispute a gun was produced, police said. A struggle over the gun ensued.

During the struggle, the gun went off, striking Chrystie in the neck. The handgun used in this incident was not legally possessed, police said.

On Tuesday, July 16, Chrystie succumbed to his injuries.

No arrests have been made, and no charges have been filed at this time. The investigation into this case is ongoing.
