Sheetz, a gas station chain, hiring for Michigan store opening in Romulus

Sheetz, a gas station and convenience store chain in six states and expanding to Michigan, plans to hold two recruiting events next week in Romulus to hire 30 employees to work in a new store set to open later this summer.

The Pennsylvania-based company — which is facing a federal government claim that it has discriminated against minority job applicants — said it is seeking full- and part-time workers, including employees for management roles, in its first Michigan store , which is under construction at 33380 Wick Rd. in Romulus.

The two events, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday, at the Hilton Garden Inn, 31800 Smith Rd., Romulus, include opportunities to find out more about the family-owned company, the career paths it offers and to sit for interviews.

In April, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a lawsuit in Baltimore against the Altoona, Pennsylvania-based Sheetz and two subsidiary companies, alleging that its hiring practices of "criminal history screening" has led to a "discriminatory impact against Black, Native American and other workers."

The feds, however, said they do not allege Sheetz was motivated by racial animus.

In a statement, Sheetz responded to the lawsuit saying it "does not tolerate discrimination of any kind."

Sheetz, which employs more than 26,000 employees, has 740-plus stores in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Ohio and North Carolina, and plans to add more retail locations throughout suburban Detroit — and other places in Michigan.
