June 15, 2024 is National Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Elder abuse is a significant issue that affects vulnerable members of our society. The mission of this walk is to raise awareness about this issue, provide valuable resources, and help educate people on how to combat elder abuse.

Stephanie Moore, the Executive Director for Family Refuge Center explained why elder abuse awareness is so important.

“We really just want to make it known that yes, this is happening. It’s happening in your area. It’s probably happening to your mother, your grandmother, a family member, somebody that’s close to you, and we want to be able to provide everyone with knowledge on ways that they can assist,” said Moore.

Knowing the forms of elder abuse, such as financial abuse or abuse from a caretaker in the home, is important to the longevity of a senior’s life. You will be able to see the signs and find ways to prevent this abuse from happening. Individuals who are 55 or older are considered to be an elder.

Although this walk is free to the public and all are welcomed and encouraged to come, Family Refuge Center has invited community partners that work close with the elder population and have encouraged them to create teams for this walk. The team with the most laps will win a prize. The purpose is to share resources that meet the needs of the elder population and to bring them resources as well. The State of West Virginia is becoming more of a retirement state, and resources about elder abuse from Family Refuge Center are readily available.
