Greg Sarris, leader of the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria that owns Graton Casino, is taking a more aggressive stance against the proposed Koi Nation gambling resort just 15 miles away on Shiloh Road. The Koi Nation with ancestral land in Clearlake is proposing a casino that would rival Graton, at least in size, and Sarris is arguing that it would be in Graton territory. Koi leaders Darin and Dino Beltran, who are brothers, say that their tribe’s history is marked by a forced diaspora, and that Koi families have lived in Sonoma County for several generations.
California fire rapidly reaches state's top 10 biggest ever
A fire raging out of control in northern California has rapidly become among the biggest ever in the western US state, authorities said Saturday. The so-called Park Fire had burned almost 350,000 acres (142,000 hectares) as of late Saturday morning, making it the seventh-largest ever recorded in California history, the state agency Cal Fire said on X. The fire, which prompted orders for more than 4,000 people to flee their homes, was burning through a largely rural, mountainous area near the city of Chico, some 90 miles (145 kilometers) north of state capital Sacramento.
Sewer Rates in Rohnert Park to be Raised Seven-Percent
Rohnert Park is raising its sewer rates by about seven percent. The rate increase, approved by the Rohnert Park City Council this week, will take effect in October. Monthly bills for single-family homes are expected to increase from $42.20 to $45.33. There will be incremental rate hikes during each of the next three years. The city says it needs to keep up with the rising cost of managing and treating its wastewater. Rohnert Park currently has the least expensive sewer rates in Sonoma County. Cotati will take that title in October.
Federal grand jury charges short seller Andrew Left in $16M stock manipulation scheme
A federal grand jury in California has charged short seller Andrew Left with multiple counts of securities fraud for a $16 million stock market manipulation scheme. The Department of Justice said in a statement on Friday that Left, who was a securities analyst, trader, and guest commentator on television channels including CNBC and Fox Business, is charged with one count of engaging in a securities fraud scheme, 17 counts of securities fraud, and one count of making false statements to federal investigators. As a short seller, Left would make money betting stocks would fall. The Justice Department said that Left conducted business under the name Citron Research, which had a website that published investment recommendations. He published research on companies ranging from Tesla and GameStop to Grand Canyon Education and Peloton. If convicted, Left faces a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison on the securities fraud scheme count, 20 years in prison on each securities fraud count, and five years in prison on the false statements count.
