Raging chemical fire burns at commercial facility east of L.A.

Dozens of firefighters worked quickly to extinguish a massive fire at a commercial facility in Rosemead on Wednesday.

The fire in the 2600 block of N. River Avenue near Garvey Avenue was first reported around 2:30 p.m., according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Crews arrived to find intense flames and thick black, toxic smoke billowing into the sky from an outdoor storage area. Sky5 reporter Gil Leyvas said large containers of chemicals were ablaze, and fire crews treated the fire as a hazmat situation.

Rosemead is approximately 11 miles east of downtown Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Valley, and smoke was visible for miles.

Leyvas said the facility is owned by Paramelt , a company that produces waxes and adhesives, which burned and fueled the flames.

By 4 p.m., crews had extinguished the fire and were dousing the remaining hot spots.

There were no reports of serious injuries, and the cause of the fire was under investigation.
