Toledo's Savage Park splash pad reopens
Smiles spread across the faces of about a dozen children as they played in the water of the Savage Park splash pad for the first time since the summer of 2023. The splash pad, which failed a health department inspection last spring, had been out of operation for the start of the 2024 season; Tuesday at noon it finally reopened. The city reported it had made “all of the necessary valve adjustments to the water system,” and the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department on Tuesday morning OK’d the opening. “It’s a great relief to see that the children in this community now can have a splash pad to go to, that’s workable, and they can cool off during the hot summer months,” said Earl Mack, a longtime resident of the neighborhood.

Powell: Owners dread day beloved pet gets sick
With tears, hope, and prayers, many of us who consider our pets as family members dread the day that comes all too soon. Our cat or dog that has been part of the family for years is ill with little chance of recovery. That is when we must come face to face with what we have always known but ignored. They don’t live as long as we do. That explains the heartache I am facing with Maximilian, my seven-year-old tiger cat. His illness and loss of five pounds should have been expected. The veterinarian on the first visit after the kitten was rescued warned me that he had feline leukemia and with love and good care could possibly live to be six. At the time, six years was a long time and the good care included eight B-12 shots.

National Museum of the Great Lakes celebrates Ding Schoonmaker Day
Visitors enjoyed a bright sunny day with their friends and families as they walked aboard the historic Col. James M. Schoonmaker Museum Ship admission-free in honor of Ding Schoonmaker Day on Monday. The National Museum of the Great Lakes offered free admission onto the Schoonmaker to tourists who bought a museum-only ticket to celebrate the 13th anniversary of the ship’s rechristening and honor Ding Schoonmaker, grandson of Col. James M. Schoonmaker, who was a significant part of the ship’s restoration. The ship was rechristened back to its original name in 2011 — from the S.S. Willis B. Boyer to the S.S. James. M. Schoonmaker — almost 100 years after the ship was commissioned in 1911. “This is the largest artifact that we have in our collection,” said Ashley Streichert, marketing and communications manager for the National Museum of the Great Lakes, who also alluded to the tugboat Ohio. “Seeing both of the boats gives you an opportunity to really go back in time. It’s a self-guided tour, but we do have volunteers on board if you have any questions.”

Radio days: Wood County Museum hosts amateur radio operators
Ham radio operators are the unsung heroes of communication. If the grid goes down and telephones and internet no longer work, there’s always ham radio. That’s the philosophy behind Field Days, an international ham radio exercise sponsored by the American Radio Relay League to raise awareness about emergency communication procedures using temporary antennas and emergency power. Last week, several members of the Wood County Amateur Radio Club participated in the local version of Field Days at Wood County Museum. Bob Willman has been a ham radio enthusiast and member of the Wood County Amateur Radio Club since 1971.
