Savage Park splash pad will undergo inspection Tuesday
As of Monday, Joe Fausnaugh — the city of Toledo’s director of Parks and Youth Services — would confidently let his kids play at the Savage Park splash pad, he said, even though it has been shut down by the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department. In May of 2023, the splash pad failed a Health Department inspection because it violated Makenna’s Law — a law that regulates water pressure at pools, splash pads, and water parks. As summer of 2024 commenced, the splash pad was not ready to open. Despite many difficulties altering the mechanics of the splash pad, Mr. Fausnaugh thinks it is finally ready to safely serve the community. “We’ve been partnering with the water distribution department and the city facilities department to adjust the controls for the splash pad,” Mr. Fausnaugh said. “It’s taken a lot of tries and some failed attempts, but we think we’ve finally got things dialed in.”

National Museum of the Great Lakes celebrates Ding Schoonmaker Day
Visitors enjoyed a bright sunny day with their friends and families as they walked aboard the historic Col. James M. Schoonmaker Museum Ship admission-free in honor of Ding Schoonmaker Day on Monday. The National Museum of the Great Lakes offered free admission onto the Schoonmaker to tourists who bought a museum-only ticket to celebrate the 13th anniversary of the ship’s rechristening and honor Ding Schoonmaker, grandson of Col. James M. Schoonmaker, who was a significant part of the ship’s restoration. The ship was rechristened back to its original name in 2011 — from the S.S. Willis B. Boyer to the S.S. James. M. Schoonmaker — almost 100 years after the ship was commissioned in 1911. “This is the largest artifact that we have in our collection,” said Ashley Streichert, marketing and communications manager for the National Museum of the Great Lakes, who also alluded to the tugboat Ohio. “Seeing both of the boats gives you an opportunity to really go back in time. It’s a self-guided tour, but we do have volunteers on board if you have any questions.”

Radio days: Wood County Museum hosts amateur radio operators
Ham radio operators are the unsung heroes of communication. If the grid goes down and telephones and internet no longer work, there’s always ham radio. That’s the philosophy behind Field Days, an international ham radio exercise sponsored by the American Radio Relay League to raise awareness about emergency communication procedures using temporary antennas and emergency power. Last week, several members of the Wood County Amateur Radio Club participated in the local version of Field Days at Wood County Museum. Bob Willman has been a ham radio enthusiast and member of the Wood County Amateur Radio Club since 1971.
