ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) — Expansion plans are underway at the Round Rock Sports Center, with construction expected to wrap in early 2026. Once completed, the development work will add two new courts for a total of eight at the facility, city officials said in a release Monday.

The Round Rock Sports Center first opened in January 2014 to support both sports recreation and events. The existing 82,800-square-foot facility features six basketball courts that can also be used as 12 volleyball courts, the release added.

Once expanded, the new floorplan can be reconfigured to “accommodate a 16-court volleyball tournament or separated to hold a 6-court basketball tournament and a cheer competition simultaneously,” officials said.

“Sports Tourism in Round Rock has brought more than $162 million in economic activity to the city since the opening of the Sports Center,” said Chad McKenzie, director of sports management and tourism, in the release. “This expansion project will allow Round Rock to stay competitive with other communities in hosting a wide variety of events and attracting top-tier events.”

The center has housed several state-level and national events, such as the USA Deaf Basketball National Tournament, the Texas State Taekwondo Championships, and national cheer and dance competitions.

Along with events, the facility is home to youth basketball, volleyball, fitness camps, sports training and recreation for residents. More details on events and programming are available online .

People will still be able to access the center during construction, with the facility remaining fully operational. Some individual courts and restrooms might be temporarily offline during construction, with reduced or modified parking spaces available during the expansion period.

The project is funded via the City of Round Rock’s 2023 bond package, which had a sticker price of $274 million.
