‘That’s where home is’: Ruidoso family lost everything after wildfires, but plans to rebuild

LUBBOCK, Texas — Dana Holder and her family lost their home in Ruidoso’s wildfires this week. The Holder family is grateful to be unharmed but devastated by their loss.

Holder told EverythingLubbock.com on Tuesday the family came to Lubbock with a few personal items while they figure out their next steps.

Holder, who was born and raised in Ruidoso, didn’t believe the village would burn as much as it did.

The Holder household is now a “pile of ash with a metal roof that lays on top,” according to Holder. The family will have to start over completely.

During this unimaginable time for Holders and many other Ruidoso residents, Holder said there are many “angels in [her] path.”

Many friends have stepped up to help the Holder family during this time. One Roswell family housed the Holders and six other families on the first night of the fire.

The Holders plan to rebuild their home in Ruidoso as they have built their roots there throughout the years.

“That’s where home is,” Holder said. “I wouldn’t know where else to go.”

The Holders plan to go back to Ruidoso this week and begin the process of rebuilding their life.

Throughout this experience, Holder said she was reminded of the importance of family.

“The fact that it was intentionally set, I can’t wrap my head around,” Holder said.

“We’re for sure are not the only people hurting,” Holder said.
