    Friday’s Five Facts

[1] Trial against Alec Baldwin continues – Between witness testimonies yesterday Judge Mary Marlow Sommer granted a request from the prosecution allowing new evidence to be used in the trial. That evidence includes a phone call Baldwin made to loved ones on the day of the shooting. Baldwin is accused of firing a gun, that had a live round in it on the set of Rust killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

[2] Mother pleads guilty to child abandonment resulting in the death of her child – Thursday in court Kreshenna Delaney pleaded guilty to multiple charges. This comes after Delaney took her unresponsive two-year-old child to an Albuquerque hospital in May of last year. Doctors there said the child died from a cocaine overdose. Judge Bruce Fox ordered a 60-day evaluation for Delaney out of concern her erratic behavior could possibly be a mental health issue. She is facing up to 21 years behind bars and will be sentenced following the evaluation.

[3] Less stormy and breezy weather – Temperatures will reach well into the 90’s, with triple digits possible in the eastern plains, as well as in southern areas, and even around Farmington. In the mountains, temperatures will reach the high 70’s and 80’s before any rain falls in the early afternoon. Burn-scar flash flooding will still be possible around Ruidoso and a bit more likely around Santa Fe, but conditions will generally be drier enough that heavy rain will not be as widespread.

[4] Village of Ruidoso preparing for more flooding – A Ruidoso continues to recover following damaging flash floods, the village is advising residents to take precautions as monsoon season continues. Officials say they are working to mitigate future flooding by clearing debris from culverts and using sandbags. Lincoln County emergency services says they also have crews and swift water rescue teams on standby. The village says it is not turning tourists away from the area, but warns visitors to be aware of their surroundings.

[5] Smokey Bear celebrating 80th birthday with reading challenge – To celebrate his 80th birthday, Smokey Bear is asking children to read more books. Smokey is asking kids 4-10 years old to enroll in the Smokey Bear Reading Challenge. A list of approved books can be found here . Libraries around the state are participating and handing out special prizes.
