RYE — A bicyclist was injured and hospitalized Thursday in a collision with a vehicle, an incident that remains under investigation.

The town’s fire and police departments responded to the crash involving a Toyota Corolla and a bicyclist at the intersection of Wallis and Brackett roads shortly before 5 p.m., according to Rye Fire Chief Mark Cotreau. The accident occurred a short distance from Pirates Cove Beach.

The bicyclist was brought to Portsmouth Regional Hospital after the accident for treatment of a non-life-threatening leg injury, according to authorities.

No charges had been filed as of Friday morning. A preliminary investigation shows the bicyclist may have pulled out into the roadway as the car was turning onto Brackett Road, according to Deputy Police Chief Scott Blaisdell.

“It’s still under investigation at this time,” Blaisdell said.

The driver involved in the incident was uninjured.

“It could have been a lot worse than what it was,” Cotreau said of the accident.

Members of the public with information about the crash are asked by police to contact Cpl. Joshua McAllister by email at jmcallister@town.rye.nh.us.
