Up-and-coming pop rocker Knox stopped by Audacy’s ALT 94.7 to talk with host Dallas about the start of his career and the new music he’s got coming.

LISTEN NOW: Knox Joins Dallas in Sacramento

Before Knox was heard by millions of TikTok fans, he was hoping to be heard on American Idol . Speaking with Dallas of ALT 94.7 Sacramento, Knox discussed his career launching without the competition show, since his audition never even aired on TV. Saying that “nothing good” came from the show audition, the two joked about his 5-year American Idol anniversary. “I mean, Lionel Richie was a fan. Luke Bryan and Katy [Perry] were not fans. But it was weird. American Idol was weird, man.” After being forced to change his audition song at the last minute, Knox decided to perform an Ed Sheeran tune -- but said that didn’t go well with the judges. “My dear friend Katy Perry was like, why would we need you if we already have Ed Sheeran?” he recalled. “And I was like, that was so mean. But honestly, it fueled me and made me the man I am today, so I'm grateful.”

In 2022, Knox signed a record deal with Atlantic Records -- the same record label that both Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran are signed to. And when host Dallas pointed this out, Knox was clearly grinning from the irony of it all. “Yeah, that's my like, that's like my soft flex in life,” he said, chuckling.

Since signing a record deal, Knox has released 2 EPs and nearly 20 songs. His singles “Sneakers” and “Not the 1975” quickly achieved TikTok audio fame and have even made it into mainstream radio. All in all, Knox is the perfect example of an up-and-coming artist who’s making it big. “Now I think people think that I'm like a full-blown, like, famous person now that I'm going to the Met Gala next year, which I'm not [famous]” Knox said humbly. “You know, I guess maybe one day, like you're looking at the charts and you're looking at what's getting added at certain stations and says like Beyoncé ... Knox. Which is hilarious.”

While extremely grateful, the 25-year-old musician is still in humorous disbelief. “You know, I'm like, sitting in my apartment in my Scooby Doo PJs with my dog. I'm like, 'Oh, yeah, dude, this is what blowing up is like,'” he joked again.

As for new music, Knox has quite a few things cooking. He joined ALT 94.7 when traveling back from L.A., where he said that he and his friends, “Just made a bunch of new songs.”

“I have this one song called ‘Change Your Mind’ that I got the like, almost final version yesterday and I was kind of freaking out about it,” he told host Dallas. “But you know, but then I go back and listen to the other songs and I'm like, ‘Oh, I'm excited for this one’ so honestly, I'm just excited for the whole year… We're just, you know, we're not going to stop putting out music and we're just going to go, go, go, go. Go until, I guess, until the world gets a little sick of me.”

No one’s getting sick over here! For the full interview, be sure to listen above and tune into the free Audacy app to get ALT 94.7 anywhere, anytime.
