The Unknown History of Cape Cod’s Modernist Movement
When one thinks of epicenters of American modernist movement in the immediate post-WWII era, Southern California, with its Los Angeles Case Study homes and Palm Springs vacation pads, is top of mind. But in that same era, another influential enclave was being developed in a far less hospitable environment: the far end of Cape Cod, on Massachusetts’s Atlantic Coast. And this year marks the 75th anniversary of one of the earliest and most significant of these local structures, a lakeside house in Wellfleet built in 1949 by famed Bauhaus designer Marcel Breuer.
Interview with developer missed the mark
As concerns the [“We Have Questions”] article entitled “I Had a Vision of What Plymouth Could Be”:. The buildings (The Armory, Mount Pleasant School, etc.) that have been renovated by [Rick] Vayo, et al, are beautiful. I love that they remain in keeping with the historical architecture of their neighborhoods. That said, the decision to change the only hotel overlooking the ocean in a coastal town to luxury apartments seems out of step with that vision and in stark contrast to a comment made later in the article about there being no nice hotels in downtown Plymouth. That was a missed opportunity to turn that site into a super cool, mod boutique hotel.

A look at Cordage Park in Plymouth: A 40R District
In light of Fairhaven’s upcoming public hearing to create a 40R overlay district (see legal notice on page 21), the Neighb News traveled to Plymouth, to take a look at Cordage Park, an approximately 55-acre district on the waterfront in North Plymouth at the site of a former rope factory, the Plymouth Cordage Company. The project is largely considered a success in the overall 40R story in Massachusetts. The area was run down with a lot of empty buildings, but now is an active space with residences and businesses.
