Sagaponack, NY-based Wölffer Estate built a brand on summer. It’s Hamptons location is the home of beaches, oyster stands, fresh farm produce and a unique terroir on which to plant grapes. Embracing that, the team, including brother and sister (and second generation owners) Marc and Joey Wölffer, along with Max Rohn and Roman Roth (who also serves as winemaker), introduced Summer In A Bottle, a rosé-based brand that built a following—and a lifestyle.

After producing rosé for 30 years, it's the heart of who we are, and it's taken us internationally showing our quality and unique winemaking style ,” says Marc Wölffer, co-owner and Chief Strategy Officer, Wölffer Estate.

The last expansion of the line, three years ago, brought in a Côtes de Provence Rosé. But now, as the Summer In A Bottle brand turns 10, Wölffer is ready to bring something fresh to the market, adding a Sauvignon Blanc to the collection; a varietal plays beautifully off the bounty of Long Island’s East End and is something Wölffer had been doing well already.

We’re meeting the demand to provide refreshing, light locally sourced wines to pairing with locally sourced cuisine. This is home, and we owe it to our local market to produce this outstanding varietal that thrives here ,” says Wölffer.

The unique combination of the Bridgehampton soil and the breezes from the Atlantic provide the Bordeaux-like conditions that are necessary to achieve the balance of ripeness and acidity of Wölffer’s signature style. It has aromas of gooseberries, fresh dandelions and lime, complementing the elegant mouthful of fine green apple, ripe kiwi and honeydew melon. The playful acidity is designed to pair well with cheese and seafood, but is especially highlighted when sipped with oysters.

This Sauvignon Blanc isn’t like others, says Roman Roth, winemaker at Wölffer Estate. It is a grape that the winery has been working with for many years, watching and monitoring how reliable and consistent it has been in its climate. A labor of love that is finally ready for its time to shine even brighter.

To me the key to a great Sauvignon Blanc is balance. I try to capture our unique combination on Long Island. Having the same latitude as Madrid/Spain – which means lots of sun and ripeness – and the wonderful cooling sea breeze; elegant and fresh. Long Island can make some of the most food friendly wines in the U.S. and this certainly is proof of it ,” he says.
