Jasper volleyball trying to finally break through
JASPER — A new class and a new sectional bring about a new kind of expectations for Jasper’s volleyball squad. The Wildcats moved from Class 4A down to Class 3A for 2024 and gone are the days of falling shy against the likes of Evansville Reitz, Castle and Evansville North in the tournament — and in is a brand-new sectional also featuring Southridge, Gibson Southern, Princeton, Vincennes Lincoln and Washington.
OC Historical Society to mark 50th Anniversary of Historic Lindley House Museum July 27
PAOLI — The Orange County Historical Society will play celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Historic Lindley House Museum on Saturday, July 27th. The event will be held (weather permitting) at the Thomas Elwood Lindley House in Paoli and will run from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Planned activities include guided house tours, special guests, musical entertainment by Lick Creek Band, arts & crafts, heritage related activities & more. Hometown Scoops will be offering up cool and delicious ice cream treats. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs.

First, on December 7th, Norm Lewis is coming to town and hitting the stage with The Norm Lewis Christmas Show. Among Lewis' Broadway credits- Porgy & Bess, Chicken and Biscuits, and Andrew Lloyd Weber's The Phantom of the Opera, a production in which he made history in 2014 when he became Broadway's first black Phantom.
Greater Jasper Consolidated Schools Prepares to Welcome Students
Staff preparation and student achievement topped the agenda at the last school board meeting before the first day of school for Greater Jasper Consolidated Schools. The board was provided a curriculum update, including the ILEARN assessment results for 2024. In addition, they were given an overview of summer 23-24 Advance Placement testing, transportation services, staff preparedness, and reappointments. In other business, the agreement with the City of Jasper for School Resource Officers Fiscal Year 25 budget was approved. Authorization was also given to publish the CPF and Bus Replacement Plan on the GJCS website.

ISP INVESTIGATING 2 VEHICLE FATAL TRAFFIC CRASH
(EFFINGHAM) The Illinois State Police are continuing to investigate a two vehicle traffic crash that occurred at approximately 5:45 this past Friday evening in Jasper County. Troop 9 Headquarters reports that a car, driven by 47 year old Jason Nation of Springfield, Illinois, was traveling westbound on Illinois Route 33, about three miles northwest of Newton, when he attempted to pass another westbound vehicle, and struck an eastbound utility van head-on. While Nation was pronounced deceased at the scene while the driver of Unit Two, 31 year old Christopher R. Huckelby of Jasper, Indiana, and a passenger, 47 year old Jason J. Trentz of Raleigh, Illinois, were both taken to area hospitals with injuries. Route 33 was closed for nearly seven hours for the crash investigation and clean up. Emergency crews from Jasper County assisted the ISP at the accident scene. No other details are available.
