ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The City of St. Charles launched another one-day crackdown on drivers speeding through neighborhoods.

Friday marks the second effort in launching the city’s Zero Tolerance Program, where the department used half the force to deter speeding. Mayor Dan Borgmeyer says over 20 officers were looking out for traffic troubles Friday.

“Tickets were starting to be 40 mph, 50 mph, 60 mph in neighborhoods—that’s unacceptable with kids on the street,” he said. “We came up with this no-tolerance, one-day program at random. It might be two days a month; it might be seven days a month—we’re going to do it until we got the people’s attention.”

Borgmeyer said on their last no-tolerance day, police wrote 81 tickets for speeding, stop sign violations, and some temporary tags.

“I think the people who got tickets will go slower in the street. I think it raised everybody’s awareness a little bit,” he said.

Police Chief Ray Juengst says the program does not interfere with officers’ ability to respond to other calls.
