Jefferson County doctor, employees accused of conspiracy, health care fraud
Dr. David A. Parks, 66, and James M. Bilderback, 58, both of House Springs, along with Michelle J. Scheer, 43, of St. Louis have been accused of prescribing controlled substances and health care fraud. The three allegedly conspired together for more than five years, the U.S. District Attorney’s Office reported.

Damage, backups to Pacific sewers after storms
Heavy rains in recent weeks are causing sewer woes in Pacific. A 90-inch stormwater culvert collapsed on Integram Drive Tuesday as a result of the deluge, opening up a huge hole in the ground with a circumference of about 20 feet. Separately, a number of Pacific residents voiced complaints about wastewater backups into their homes.

Memorial service held for fallen former Union firefighter
Firefighters and emergency personnel from across Missouri attended the memorial service for Boone County Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Matt Tobben on Saturday at East Central College. Tobben died while responding to a swift water rescue in Columbia on July 8. Tobben had served with the Union Fire Department for 19 years before taking a job with Boone County two months ago. On July 9, a procession of emergency vehicles delivered Tobben's body to his hometown of Union. The Saturday service was coordinated by the Boone County and Union Fire Protection Districts along with the Missouri Fire Service Funeral Assistance Team. Friend of Tobben and Union Fire Captain Joe Straatmann spoke during the memorial service about the memories he had with Tobben and the type of person he was. "He was a man like no other man. His heart and drive was simple. It was to provide for his family and to help others," said Straatmann.

A "Pirate Academy" was held Friday at the Union branch of Scenic Regional Library in which kids were instructed on mock swordfighting using styrofoam "pool noodles." Teaching the class were representatives of Swords and Roses, a party company out of St. Louis that specializes in pirate themes. about a dozen kids came out to learn how to defend and attack like a pirate.

UNION - Hundreds of people gathered in the gymnasium of East Central College in Union for the funeral of fallen Assistant Boone County Fire Chief Matthew Tobben. Dozens of law-enforcement vehicles from agencies across the state escorted his casket from the Oltmann Funeral Home off the Union town square to the university campus Saturday morning.

St. Clair man charged with stalking
A St. Clair man has been charged with felony stalking after repeatedly contacting and threatening the subject of a recent temporary protection order. Charles Calvert III, 32, allegedly violated a protection order that was issued on July 4 when he called the victim numerous times within the next few days, leaving threatening voicemail messages and sending unwanted texts.
