St. Francis man sentenced for assaults
PIERRE, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - A St. Francis, South Dakota, man convicted of two counts of Assault Resulting in Serious Bodily Injury was sentenced on Monday. 25-year-old Charles Cordier was sentenced to five years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay a $200 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Annual Alumni Banquet
The Valentine High School Class of 1999 hosted the annual Alumni Banquet in Valentine on Saturday evening. The banquet was held at the Catholic parish hall with the meal served by the members of the Catholic Church. The meat was prepared by Niobrara Valley Vineyards. Entertainment was provided by Heart City Dance and the Valentine High School Cheer and Dance teams. Ameilia Monroe was honored as the oldest graduate to attend . Ameilia graduated in 1944. The class of 99 presented Amelia with a bouquet of flowers. After the banquet, the class of 1974 hosted an all class gathering at the old upstairs gym with live music. Representatives from numerous classes enjoyed the evening.
Valentine 8U Rookies Team
The Valentine 8U Rookies team ended their 2024 season with a 7-4 record and a 2nd place finish in the 16th Annual Bob Haley Memorial Rookies Classic in Winner, SD June 29 & 30th. The Rookies beat Lyman on Saturday with a score of 1-0 with a walk off double by Kade Arganbright bringing in Beckett Walking to score the one run for Valentine. They then faced Gregory 2 a team they battled with earlier in the season when they played in a down pour on June 14th, Valentine winning 1-0. On Saturday the 8U got the bats swinging and scored 5 runs winning the semi final game 5-0. The win put Valentine in the Sunday championship game against Gregory 1 another game Valentine battled earlier in the season losing 6-3 on June 18th. Gregory scored a quick 3 runs in the top of the first inning. Valentine came out bottom of the first and scored 4 runs with Lincoln Bargen hitting a in the park home run scoring 3 runs and Maxx McSweeney followed him with a single home run. Top of the third Gregory added another 2 runs and went ahead 5-4. The 8U played some tough baseball but it wasn’t enough to get the win.
Arrest made after bicyclist killed in accident near Valentine
The Cherry County Sheriff’s Office has made an arrest stemming from a fatal hit-and-run accident west of Valentine on Saturday morning. The sheriff’s office announced the arrest Monday night on its Facebook page, although the agency did not release the suspect’s name or when the apprehension occurred. The crash involved a cyclist participating in the Tour de Nebraska.

Arrest made in connection with hit-and-run bicycle fatality
VALENTINE, Neb. — The Cherry County Sheriff's Department has made an arrest in connection to the death of a Tour de Nebraska bicycle rider in a hit-and-run collision early Saturday morning. The accident occurred approximately 3.5 miles west of Valentine on Highway 20, an area off the designated Tour de Nebraska route.

According to Cherry County Attorney Eric Scott, law enforcement investigated a fatality which occurred sometime Saturday morning approximately 3 miles west of Valentine on Highway 20. At 10:58 central time, Cherry County dispatch received a report of a bicycle laying on the north shoulder of Highway 20. The operator of the bicycle, an 82 year-old male, who was a participant in the Tour De Nebraska annual event, was found lying in the north ditch deceased. The victim appeared to have significant injuries consistent with those of someone who had been hit by an automobile. Monday evening authorities made an arrest in the incident in Grant County Nebraska.
