Smokey Bear’s 80th, fire safety tips at Pena Adobe Park
He’s perhaps better known than Yogi Bear, McGruff the Crime Dog, and Woodsy Owl, but maybe equally known as Uncle Sam, the top-hatted, gray-haired, stern-looking man pointing his finger in a military recruitment poster. Letters to the Editor, Saturday July 27
EDITOR: Of course, the city of Santa Rosa OK’d the demolishing of the Summerfield Cinema (“An unhappy ending,” July 20). It seems the city is removing so many places of wonderful memories for its people. This is no longer a town. It is a city. This time leaving people without what may be their only enjoyment that is easy to get to. How many “fitness centers,” i.e., gyms, have opened and closed in the past few years? Is it time for a completely new city council?
Bill Pramuk, Trees and People in Napa Valley: In praise of the cherry
Lately I have been stopping by the fruit stand on Silverado Trail to pick up fresh strawberries. A sweet bonus has been fresh cherries, one of my favorite things. There are certain things in life that have a special appeal, just for being what they are, their unique qualities, their natural beauty. Think of Maria’s list in the Sound of Music — “Raindrops on roses...”. My list includes the cherry. Everything about it from the sight of two cherries on their stems, the crisp bite of the fruit, the burst of the sweet juicy flesh and, given the right location, spitting out the pits. Further, relating to food, cherry wood is great for grilling, adding a sweet fruity flavor to meats and vegetables.

Pro-Palestine activists issue ‘People’s Ceasefire Resolution’
Frustrated with the negative response to ceasefire resolutions by the majority of Sonoma County cities, pro-Palestine activists July 23 declared a “People’s Resolution.”. Cotati is the only city in the county to approve a resolution calling for an end to Israel’s ten-and-a-half-month assault on Gaza, which has left an estimated 40,000 Gazans dead and many more injured or buried under rubble. Activists failed in their attempts to pass similar resolutions in Sonoma, Santa Rosa, Petaluma and Sebastopol,
