Thief River Falls Woman Sentenced for January Apartment Fire
THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. (KVRR) — A Thief River Falls woman accused of setting her apartment on fire in January after a night out drinking is convicted of 4th degree arson. Misty Myhrer was given credit for serving a week in jail and faces no additional jail time unless she violates probation, which she is on for two years.

NORTHWEST MINNESOTA WOMAN VICTIM OF APPARENT SWINDLE
(Warren, MN) — The Star Tribune is reporting that a 67-year-old retired woman from Warren in Northwest Minnesota is the victim of $136,000 swindle at the hands of a man from Texas. The woman was coerced into turning over $100,000 in gold bars and $36,000 in cash to a man who traveled to her home and collected the precious metal. 23-year-old Mutahir Ahmed Khan from the Dallas suburb of McKinney, was arrested in Pennsylvania and appeared in Marshall County District Court after being charged with two counts of felony theft in connection with the swindling. Khan remains jailed in lieu of $1.5 million bail and is due back in court on Tuesday.

POLK COUNTY COMMISSIONERS APPROVE LEVY PETITIONS, WILL PARTICIPATE IN TAX FOFREITURE SETTLEMENT
The Polk County Commissioners met Tuesday morning at the Polk County Government Center in Crookston. The commissioners heard from April Swenby, the manager of the Sand Hill River Watershed District (SHRWD). Swenby asked the commissioners for approval on three separate petitions for using the taxing authority for 2024. The first petition ($135,866.75), which is the maximum allowable by law (0.00798%), will provide funding to water management areas (construction, maintenance, beaver control, and information services) related to specific projects within the Sand Hill River Watershed District. The second petition ($135,866.75) will be used for various water quality and erosion efforts. The third petition ($100,000) will provide funds for continuing efforts related to watershed studies, education, and agency support. “The Watershed District receives its funding for projects through Minnesota Stature 103D.905, Subdivision 3, and that allows for a set percentage of our tax capacity for each petition. Our Watershed District has evaluated the needs and is determined to keep the projects flowing. We have separate categories,” said Swenby. “With the tax capacity that is allowed, they have asked the county to approve $135,866.75 for water quality, the same amount for water management and retention, and $100,000 for studies and agency support.”

The Crookston School District will be holding two community meetings/forums to discuss a cell phone policy on August 1 and August 7. The State of Minnesota requires school districts to have a cell phone policy by March 2025, so the Crookston School District wants to implement one before school starts this fall so they don’t have any changes in the middle of the school year.
