Miner swimmers make CSCAA Scholar All-America team for 22nd straight semester
By: John Kean, Athletic Communications Director ROLLA, Mo. – Missouri S&T's swimming team has earned a spot on the College Swimming Coaches Association of America's Scholar All-America list for the 22 nd straight semester, as the Miners landed the award for the 2024 spring term. The Miners, led by head coach Danny Murphy, posted a team grade point average of 3.26 during the spring to lead the group of the 47 schools whose men's swimming teams were named to the Scholar All-America squad. Vienna Vikings sign defensive back Ken Hike Jr.
The Vienna Vikings signed defensive back Ken Hike Jr. on Monday. Ken Hike Jr. is six foot one and weighs 180 pounds. The 28-year-old from Decatur, Georgia, made 14 tackles (9 solo, 5 assists), two interceptions for 44 yards, 10 pass breakups, and one forced fumble in four games for the Helvetic Mercenaries in 2024. The Mercenaries released him last week.
Cuba motorcyclist killed in Franklin County crash
A Cuba motorcyclist was killed in a crash on Interstate 44 Sunday in Franklin County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Ruben Caldera, 73, was riding a 2023 Harley Davidson Tri Glide west at 3:50 p.m. at mile marker 234.2, between St. Clair and Stanton, when he lost control of the motorcycle, causing it to go off the right side of the road, officials said. Caldera’s motorcycle struck a rock bluff and overturned, ejecting Caldera, officials said.
Princeton Review rates S&T high for ROI, career placement, internships
Missouri University of Science and Technology is one of the nation’s best public universities when it comes to return on investment, career placement for its graduates and student internships, according to the Princeton Review’s latest “Best Value Colleges” ranking, released June 20. S&T is also the highest-rated public university in the state in all three categories.
SMH fills position of interim CEO
Salem Memorial Hospital’s board of directors hired an interim CEO Friday during a closed session meeting, according to a release sent by SMH 6:15 p.m. Monday. The board met in a special called meeting 10 a.m. Friday and voted 6-0 to select Kayla Chamberlain, who is currently the chief financial officer at the hospital, effective immediately.
Candidate forum scheduled for July 11 at community center
A candidate forum will be held 6 p.m. July 11 at the Salem Community Center @ the Armory, according to Denver Ellis, who is organizing the event. Ellis, who is a candidate for Dent County Second District Commissioner, emailed The Salem News Friday with details about the forum. He said there is no group sponsoring the event, that he organized it “because it’s important for people to hear directly from the candidates.”
Man killed after riding motorcycle off road, striking rock bluff on Interstate 44 near St. Clair
FRANKLIN COUNTY — A man was killed Sunday afternoon after driving his three-wheel motorcycle off Interstate 44 and striking a rock bluff. Ruben Caldera, 74, was riding west on I-44 right before 4 p.m. when he lost control of the bike, drove off the right side of the road and struck a rock bluff, Missouri Highway Patrol.
Missouri S&T's Remington R. Williams Award recipient announced
Ryan Highfill, a senior in civil engineering and engineering management at Missouri University of Science and Technology from Ozark, has been named a 2024 recipient of the Remington R. Williams Award. Highfill is executive director of the Associated Students of the University of Missouri (ASUM) and a former chapter president of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity.

I-44 crash leaves motorcyclist dead Sunday in Franklin County
ST CLAIR, Mo. — A motorcyclist from Cuba, Missouri, died Sunday afternoon in a crash along Interstate 44 in Franklin County. According to a crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 73-year-old Ruben Caldera was driving his motorcycle westbound on I-44 in St. Clair at about 3:50 p.m. Sunday when he lost control of his vehicle, causing it to travel off the right side of the roadway, strike a rock bluff and overturn before ejecting him.
Brumley Man Injured In HWY 42 Rollover Crash
A Brumley man is in the hospital following a crash on Friday in Maries County. According to the Highway Patrol, it happened along Highway 42 eight miles west of Vienna. 59-year-old Charles Landreth was traveling westbound in a 1998 Dodge Ram when he went off the road, overcorrected and then rolled over.
Blythe Virginia Horine
Blythe Virginia (Lewis) Horine, 91 of Devils Elbow, passed away Sunday, June 30, 2024, in her home. Mrs. Horine is survived by her son, David Hicks (Cheryl) of St. Robert; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother, Paul Lewis of the state of Florida; one sister: Caroline Wright of the State of tennessee; several other relatives and friends.
