Oak Island council revisits house size limits
Oak Island Town Council approved a motion June 18 directing the planning board to take a closer look at possible options to limit the size of new home construction. Council voted 4-1 to have the planning board provide recommendations on size limitations for new homes on both the island and in the R-7 district on the mainland.
First class of CFCC’s BLET pilot program graduates
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The first cohort of Cape Fear Community College’s Basic Law Enforcement Training pilot program has graduated. The class of sixteen graduates have all received employment from various law enforcement agencies, including the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, Wilmington Police Department, Surf City Police Department, Oak Island Police Department, Carolina Beach Police Department, Leland Police Department, Shallotte Police Department, and others.
Nothing Bundt Cakes Now Open In Leland
Cat and Greg Marinich, owners of Nothing Bundt Cakes at 1437 Military Cutoff Road in Wilmington, recently opened a new location in Leland’s Waterford Shopping Center. Cat Marinich said while it wasn’t part of their original business plan to open a second location in Brunswick County, they’ve built a loyal clientele in the area that has pleaded with them to consider opening a store there.
Pet Pals: Adult female hound looking for forever home
WILMINGTON (WWAY) — This week’s Pet Pal is a 6-year-old female hound. New Hanover County Animal Services staff says she’s been at the shelter since May and is waiting for her chance at being adopted. Staff says she’s a typical hound and can be vocal, but has a happy personality and is food-motivated.
Victim in Carolina Beach fatal stabbing identified
CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Carolina Beach Police have released the identity of the man stabbed to death on July 4th. Dakota Ryan Capes, 28, of Carolina Beach, was found dead at an apartment on Spencer Farlow Drive around 7:45 a.m. Officers were dispatched to a ‘person down’ call. That’s when they found Capes with stab wounds.
Southport to host second Food Truck Rodeo Aug. 3
SOUTHPORT, N.C. (WECT) - Southport is set to host its second annual Food Truck Rodeo on Saturday, Aug. 3, according to an announcement from the city. “This exciting event promises to be a culinary celebration, showcasing the variety of flavors and unique offerings of the local food truck community,” the city states. “Attendees will have the opportunity to indulge in a wide array of dishes from various food trucks, each bringing their own specialty to the table. New Hanover Park Named Among Top NC Industrial Sites
A New Hanover County business park is included in a recently released list of North Carolina’s 15 top industrial sites under 1,000 acres. Holly Shelter Business Park in Castle Hayne is one of the sites identified in the Selectsite Readiness Program Report from the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina (EDPNC), a statewide economic development agency. The identified sites could receive increased development and marketing support from the state and the economic development partnership.

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Cape Fear Community College (CFCC) has announced the graduation of the first cohort from its Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) pilot program. Q: What is the Cape Fear Regional Special Teams? Who’s involved, what do they do, who’s in charge — and how do they relate to SWAT?. A: Cape Fear Regional Special Teams is a regional collaboration between a host of law enforcement agencies, led by the Wilmington Police Department. They’re dispatched when agencies need more personnel — but they also host a collaborative SWAT team. In general, SWAT is rarely dispatched, but when they are it’s for high-risk situations. WHQR sat down with several WPD officers to get a better sense of how the Special Teams and SWAT work and the evolving challenges they face.
Oak Island celebrates its 25th anniversary
Oak Island capped off this year’s Beach Day festivities with a celebration of the town’s 25th anniversary. Yaupon Beach and Long Beach merged in 1999, and Oak Island’s official charter was ratified by North Carolina General Assembly on July 1. Oak Island has celebrated its inception on July 1 every year since with what is known as Beach Day.
UNCW installs Permeable Pavement on parts of its campus
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Some new pavement at UNCW is hoping to do more than just improve parking at the university. Permeable Pavement ,which allows water to run through it, will soon replace several sections of conventional asphalt in UNCW’s Randall Parking Lot. This project is one of many looking to reduce the volume of polluted storm water runoff in the Bradley and Hewlett’s Creek watersheds. The North Carolina Coastal Federation, UNCW and the City of Wilmington are working with contractors on the project. UNCW Associate Professor Jennifer Biddle said collaboration is key for more projects like this in the future.
Sunset River Gallery to hold Summer Art Market
