Jordan Martinook has been the heartbeat of the Carolina Hurricanes for many years now. A prototypical bottom-six forward who plays with a lot of energy and is strong on the forecheck. But Martinook can also chip in a little offensively in the bottom six. Originally a 2012 second-round draft pick of the Arizona Coyotes (now Utah), Martinook came to Carolina via trade in 2018 and has played the rest of his career in North Carolina.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Utah Jazz are signing big man Drew Eubanks to a two-year, $10 million contract. Eubanks has been in the league since 2018 and spent the 2023-24 season with the Phoenix Suns. Last season, the 27-year-old averaged 5.1 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. The 33-year-old had 31 points (17 goals, 14 assists) in 67 games with the Blackhawks this season. Signed by the Tampa Bay Lightning as an undrafted free agent on March 7, 2011, Johnson has 431 points (193 goals, 238 assists) in 738 regular-season games for the Blackhawks and Lightning and 65 points (32 goals, 33 assists) in 116 playoff games. He won the Stanley Cup twice with the Lightning, in 2020 and 2021.

The City and County of Denver likely will pay $500,000 next week to settle lawsuits against the police and sheriff’s departments. The City Council will vote Monday on two settlements. The first, stemming from a lawsuit filed against the police department in U.S. District Court, case 2023 CV00750-RM-JPO, is for $100,000. The second settlement is for $400,000 to be paid to Scott Peters and stems from a prisoner’s civil rights allegedly being violated, according to Justia. According to Justia, the lawsuit lists as defendants the City and County of Denver, Daniel Rodriguez, John Doe 1, John Doe 2, John Doe 3-12, Mohammed Mohammed, Michael Fitzmaurice, James Casias, Billie Humbles, Daniel Trujillo, Ian Schiffhauer, Michael Bennett, Cherif Sarr and Noreen Roberson. Additional information was not available Thursday.

The Edmonton Oilers have bought out the final three years of goaltender Jack Campbell’s contract, the team announced. Campbell will need to clear unconditional waivers before the buy out goes through. If it does, it will save the Oilers $3.9M in cap hit next season, and a cumulative $9M over the next three seasons, though they will then carry an empty $1.5M cap hit for three more years.
