ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - The St. Louis Cardinals were able to strengthen their hold of a Wild Card spot with a series win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday in extras.

With the Cardinals series win against the Pirates, the gap between the Wild Card spot between the Cardinals and the the first team outside the Wild Card in the New York Mets has expanded, who are now 2.5 games behind.

"They are in a pretty good position right now," said Voice of the Cardinals John Rooney on Total Information A.M. "They are still looking up at the Milwaukee Brewers, who lost (Thursday night to Colorado Rockies) so Cardinals pick up a game on them, but their sites are on the division. They are a Wild Card team if the season ended today, but that's not the goal. The goal is to win the division."

Rooney thinks what is going to help the Cardinals prepare for a hunt for the division title has been the amount of tight games the team has played over the last two months. Out of the last 47 games they have played, 34 of the games they have played have had a margin of three runs or fewer.

"That's going to help the Cardinals come August and September," said Rooney.
