ST. LOUIS – Local businesses have had growing concerns over break-ins during the last several months.

St. Louis Metropolitan Police are still investigating a number of break-ins, including at GotHam & Eggs on S. Grand Boulevard. Owners said they are just days away from their restaurant’s one-year anniversary.

“We’ve got flash Gordon stuff up on the wall, and Dick Tracy, and you know, just things from our childhood that we don’t see in our every days anymore,” Shani Knight, GotHam & Eggs Owner, said.

They’re struggling to reach the one-year anniversary.

“If there is not a change soon, this is it. Something has to change now or we are not going to make it to Aug. 2. We are not going to make it to our year,” Knight said. “Restaurant industry is really risky, we just weren’t expecting as much as we got hit with before we started getting the real good customer traffic flow.”

The restaurant has been hit with setback after setback, especially with two separate break-ins.

“At this point now, we’re trying to think of how we could be more secure. That’s another thing– that is just money that we weren’t expecting to have to put out,” she said.

After the first break-in last month, more security cameras were added to the restaurant. They gave police footage when three people broke in. Police say the investigation is still ongoing but so far they have not made any arrests.

Knight said asking for the community’s help to keep their doors open has been difficult. She hopes to make it to Aug. 2 for her family and the seven employees.

“(Trying) to build a place that could be something I can leave for my son. You know, a place that other people actually want to be. Just kind of make an impact,” Knight said.
