The St. Louis Cardinals were very active this year at the trade deadline, adding three new players in deals with the Chicago White Sox and Tampa Bay Rays.
With these trades, they addressed various needs on the roster. They needed a controllable veteran starter, a bullpen arm, and a right-handed outfield bat, and all three boxes were checked.
The team had already added veteran slugger Tommy Pham to the roster on Tuesday, but announced further moves on Thursday.
"Erick Fedde and Shawn Armstrong were added to the 26-player roster. Michael McGreevy and Ryan Loutos have been optioned to Memphis," 101 ESPN tweeted Thursday.
Fedde came to St. Louis along with Pham. He'll make his Cardinals debut on Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs. The 31-year-old right-hander owns a 7-4 record and an ERA of 3.11. He'll wear No. 12.
Armstrong was acquired minutes before the deadline from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Dylan Carlson, the once-promising outfield prospect. The 33-year-old reliever is 2-2 with a 5.40 ERA this year but is coming off a season in which he posted a 1.38 mark with Tampa Bay. Armstrong will wear No. 30 for St. Louis.
The Cards head into their weekend series with the rival Cubs with a 56-52 record. They are 1 1/2 games back of the third and final National League Wild Card spot and five games back of the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central. They currently sit in second place behind the Brew Crew.
